Thanks to the generosity of local people, our Warmer Winter appeal has amazingly reached 70% of its target already – and we’ve been able to start providing extra £49 energy top-up vouchers to people and families referred to us in hardship.
With soaring costs of food, gas and electricity, every day we’re meeting people who can’t afford to top up their prepayment meters. One mum, a care worker on a zero-hours contract, had just £2 left on her electricity meter and was desperately worried. It was wonderful to be able to provide a £49 top-up voucher, and let her know it was thanks to people who cared about the difficulty she was facing.
One older lady who had to use our food bank last week, and who has a disability and can’t afford to heat her home properly, spoke for many food bank guests when she said:
Things have changed significantly and it’s getting harder to make ends meet. It’s an extremely worrying time. I pray for a day when this will change.
