Action: Will you ask the government to rethink its £5billion cuts to disability support?

31st March 2025

In last week’s Spring Statement, the UK government announced almost £5billion in cuts to social security disability support, if MPs vote these changes through.
We’re really concerned. Two-thirds of people we support at Wandsworth Foodbank have a disability or long-term health condition, and receiving social security disability support often means the difference between severe hardship and being able to meet essential costs for food, fuel and transport (and other costs of disability).
Helping people apply for disability support they’re eligible for – but often not receiving at the point they’re referred to Wandsworth Foodbank – is one of the key things our Foodbank Advice Project helps people with. We know that once these disability payments are in place, people usually don’t need to use our food bank again because they have more income for essentials.
Sadly, we’re already meeting food bank guests who are very frightened about what these plans, and how they – or those in their family – might be impacted. At the moment, we can reassure them that the changes won’t happen until November 2026.
These cuts are also out of touch with what voters want. Seven in ten voters across political parties agree social security for disabled people should at least be enough to cover their essential living costs.
We’ve contacted our three local MPs for Battersea, Putney and Tooting to share our concerns and to ask the govenerment to rethink these cuts and make good on their promise to restore trust and fairness in our social security system.
Will you add your voice to ours? You can click here to use Trussell’s template email and customise it to what you’d like to say. Or you can use this link to find the contact details of your MP and get in touch directly. Thank you.
